Of all the times you’ve procrastinated recently, how often has it actually worked out for the better? I guess I can recall a few things that would’ve worked out better had I waited. But that’s pretty rare.

Yesterday when I was loading my car for an upcoming conference, I moved a box and knocked over a couple bottles of coffee-flavored beer that were next to it. I don’t drink coffee, much less “coffee beer”, but someone pawned them off on me. I tried to do the same with no success. In the end I couldn’t bring myself to just throw them out. Seriously, even bad beer is still beer!

For the past few months I’ve moved those two bottles from one place to another, knowing that I should just take two seconds and get them out of the garage. Instead, I accidentally knocked them over and spent nearly twenty minutes sweeping up tiny pieces of glass and spraying two bottles-worth of beer down the drain. Although my procrastination took up a bunch of time I didn’t budget for, I’m sure my bare feet will pay the real price a few weeks from now!

So what are dragging your feet on right now? Do you believe it’s harmless, or could the outcome create real problems in the future?

When it comes to people issues, many managers avoid the discomfort of dealing with the “wrong people” by moving them around or avoiding them altogether.

Regardless of what you’re putting off until tomorrow, it’s not going away. But of course, you already know that. Maybe this time, it won’t require broken glass for the lesson to finally sink in!
