You’ve got another busy day ahead of you, right? So, what’s the most important thing you have to do today? Wait, let me rephrase that. Of all of the things you’re going to do today, what will bring the most value to your team?
There’s a difference… a big difference. Don’t’ get me wrong, I’m not saying that the tasks you do every day are not important. They are. But, do YOU have to do all of them?
Now, I realize you’re not going to fill your schedule with a bunch of work that’s not important. And no, you can’t fill your entire day with “ultra-high level jobs” from sun-up to sun-down. But at some point you need to ask yourself, “Am I doing work that only I can do?”
Here’s a quick way to figure that out. Think of all of the activities you do every day. If you had to hire your replacement today, would the Craig’s List ad for your position include a lot of unique, valuable skills? Or, would the list of “must-have” abilities be pretty average?
And of course, here’s the big question… How much money would you have to offer to get someone in the door with your similar knowledge and skill set? Would you need to fork over big bucks or could you settle on hiring an entry-level replacement?
Sure, whether we like to admit it or not, we’re all replaceable. But true professionals can’t just be swapped out for the next interested candidate. True pros add real value and are pretty hard to replace.
You see, the real value you bring to your team lies in the way you impact results. You bring value every time you grow revenue or reduce costs. You bring value when you take difficult tasks and make them look easy. You bring value when you influence others to do what needs to be done. And in the end, you bring value when you help people reach their true potential.
So today, how do you plan to be valuable?
