What do you think makes a ‘winner’ a ‘winner’?  Whether it’s scoring six touchdowns in a single game at Lambeau Field or winning ‘Supreme Champion’ at World Dairy Expo, success happens on purpose.

Regardless of what your definition of success is, most people would at least agree that winning is hard to do.  It takes skill, courage, hard work, luck, and more than anything, discipline.  Losing on the other hand, comes pretty easy.

There’s no need to practice or prepare for losing.  No books to read or courses to take, it just happens.  Winning however, usually requires that someone invests a lot of time and effort to achieve excellence.  On top of that, good timing and a little luck doesn’t hurt either.

Reaching your goals also requires the discipline and courage to keep striving when you’d rather just give in and give up.  To some degree, a winner’s first victory is simply to overcome the challenges and setbacks that occur on the way to reaching the ultimate goal.  Day after day, winners push on and continue to pursue excellence, practicing and making sacrifices every day.

So what are some areas of your company that you’d like to improve?  Are you doing what it takes to reach these objectives, or are you patiently waiting for better results to just magically appear?

Too often, managers want their employees to achieve winning results without giving them a plan or the tools to do so.  Sure, these managers and employees talk about doing a better job, but that’s usually as far as it goes.

Winning doesn’t happen by accident.  Successful results come from hard work and purposeful discipline.

So what are you doing to help your team succeed?
