They call the first Monday after the regular season in the NFL “Black Monday”. This is the day a lot of head coaches show up at their office for the last time before getting walked out the door. Some coaches know it’s coming based on their team’s losing record, other coaches just “run out of time”.

This Black Monday claimed Tom Coughlin, the New York Giants’ head coach for the past twelve years. However Coughlin, one of the league’s classiest, most respected, and oldest coaches, wasn’t fired, he “resigned”.

Over the past few days there have been an outpouring of support and gratitude directed to Coach Coughlin this week from many of his former players. This message from Justin Tuck posted on Instagram really stood out to me.

Tuck’s public message to his coach reminded me of something important as we go into another New Year with high aspirations and expectations for our personal and professional lives.

Regardless of the title or job that anyone has, earning money is just one of the results of what we do. Although we tend to refer to income as how much someone makes, it’s probably more accurate to phrase it as how much someone takes. You see, money is what we take for our contribution. Our contribution, the impact, and a difference are the things we truly make.

And that’s the beauty and value of the work we do every day. Whether it involves a football field or a corn field, business is just people working with people. Every day we leave our homes and strive to reach our potential and achieve our shared goals.

Yes, the pursuit of profit will always be the legs of capitalism. That’s what keeps everything moving forward. But at the heart of what we do, the real reward for our work is the difference we make along the way.
