When it comes to what I believe and what I value, my choice is clear. And chances are, yours is too. But… all of this “clarity” doesn’t mean we share the same opinion, right?
Whether we agree or not, we know what we stand for and what we support. Everything I’ve experienced and observed throughout my life are uniquely mine, and yours are uniquely yours. And it’s the sum of these experiences that have formed our perspectives of the world around us.
My attitude about religion, about politics, about people, about relationships, about work, about money, about EVERYTHING has come from a “volley” with the world around me. I send something out to the world, and it sends something back. The world sends something to me, and I send my reaction back to it… Repeat.
Over the course of our lives, we grow up and change our beliefs and our actions. We watch to see what works and what doesn’t. And as we learn from each experience, hopefully we possess the humility and maturity to change our perspective as we develop. All along this journey, we form opinions about how the world works. And yes, most of us sincerely believe that our opinions are right. (Hey, if you actually thought your opinions were wrong, you’d change them, right!?!)
And that’s where the fork in the road really seems to exist… the part about “who’s right” and “who’s wrong”. Sure, we could take a middle-of-the-road position and say that “there’s not just one right or one wrong” answer or that “it’s not about being right or wrong”. But that doesn’t really help you make your decision, does it?
No, your choices might not be the same as mine. And as a result, we might not be able to understand why other people think the way they do. The reality is that all of us trust our unique life experiences, and we apply them in order to make our decisions.
Day after day we make choices for our lives and how we want the world around us to be. I do it. You do it. Your family and friends do it. And of course, your employees do it too.
Every day, we make a lot of important choices. Today’s no different… choose.
