Regardless of your profession or industry, the moment you’re required to make decisions that influence and impact the work, the livelihood, and the lives of others, most people will have an opinion about how you’re doing it.

No, that’s not some sort of deep revelation. The reality of being a leader is that you open yourself up to a lot of criticism and unsolicited opinions. If you’ve ever been in a leadership role, you already know that. And you also know that you can’t control or stop what people say about you.

But as a leader, there are a few things you can control.

You control how you respond to their criticism. You control what you believe about yourself and your motives.

While your doubters and detractors might try to convince people that you’re somebody that you’re not, it’s critical that you don’t doubt yourself and start believing you’re the person they’re trying to invent.

If you’re a conscientious leader, you’ll listen and reflect on what people say, asking yourself if what they’re saying is true. And if you’re a wise leader, you’ll pay more attention to the voice coming from inside yourself and follow what you know to be right and true.

Leaders don’t blindly follow the opinions, criticism, and the noise that comes at them from all directions. Leaders see clearly where they need to go. True leaders follow their convictions and are guided by their values.
